- 1 strip of fabric two (dark) measuring 3″ x 12 ¼”
- 1 square of fabric one (light) measuring 6″ x 6″
- 1 square of fabric three (medium or dark) measuring 6″ x 6″

What do we need to do?
Let’s start by making our corner blocks.
- Take your two strips of fabric measuring 3″ x 12¼” and place one on top of the other, right sides together.
- Sew the strips together with a ¼” seam.
- Press seam towards the dark side.
- Cut the strip into 3″ rectangles. There will be four of them.
- Now just turn the pieces around so they form a checkerboard effect.
Place one set of squares on top of the other, with sides together.
- You can see how nicely the pieces nest together because of how we have pressed the seams. Remember – press to the dark side.
- Pin and sew together with a ¼” seam.
- Do the same with the other two strips.
- This time press the seam open.
Now we make our Half Square Triangles.
NOTE:If you aren’t familiar with making HST’s we have a video all about it here.
To quickly recap
- Place one of the 6″ squares on top of the other – right sides together.
- Draw a line diagonally from point to point.
- Sew ¼” on either side of the line you have just drawn
- Cut down the diagonal line we drew earlier.
- You now have two half square triangles.
- Press the seams to the dark side.
- Trim the squares to 5½”.
- Once everything is trimmed we lay out the design and then begin assembling it.
- Place the two top squares on top of each other, right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam.
- Do the same with the bottom two squares.
- Now join the top squares to the bottom squares.
- And there you have it one Hourglass Variation quilt block.
