So let’s get started.

This makes a 10″ x 10″ finished block (10½” x 10½”) unfinished.

What do we need?

  • 1 strip of fabric one (light) measuring 3″ x 12¼”
  • 1 strip of fabric two (dark) measuring 3″ x 12 ¼”
  • 1 square of fabric one (light) measuring  6″ x 6″
  • 1 square of fabric three (medium or dark) measuring 6″ x 6″

What do we need to do?

Let’s start by making our corner blocks.

  •  Take your two strips of fabric measuring 3″ x 12¼” and place one on top of the other, right sides together.

  • Sew the strips together with a ¼” seam.
  • Press seam towards the dark side.

hourglass-variation-2

  • Cut the strip into 3″ rectangles. There will be four of them.

  • Now just turn the pieces around so they form a checkerboard effect.

Place one set of squares on top of the other, with sides together.

  • You can see how nicely the pieces nest together because of how we have pressed the seams. Remember – press to the  dark side.

hourglass-variation-5

  • Pin and sew together with a ¼” seam.
  • Do the same with the other two strips.
  • This time press the seam open.

Now we make our Half Square Triangles.

NOTE:
If you aren’t familiar with making HST’s we have a video all about it here.

To quickly recap

  • Place one of the 6″ squares on top of the other – right sides together.

hourglass-variation-7

  • Draw a line diagonally from point to point.

hourglass-variation-8

  • Sew ¼” on either side of the line you have just drawn

hourglass-variation-9

  • Cut down the diagonal line we drew earlier.

hourglass-variation-10

  • You now have two half square triangles.

hourglass-variation-11

  • Press the seams to the dark side.
  • Trim the squares to 5½”.hourglass-variation-12
  • Once everything is trimmed we lay out the design and then begin assembling it.

hourglass-variation-13

  • Place the two top squares on top of each other, right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam.
  • Do the same with the bottom two squares.
  • Now join the top squares to the bottom squares.

hourglass-variation-14

  • And there you have it one Hourglass Variation quilt block.
