Readers Project: Rita’s Gecko Art Quilt

Note From Alanda Craft: I think Rita has done a great job on her Gecko Art Quilt and I love the colors she has used.

In our tutorial, we show you how to add corner pockets for hanging. But I do like the tabs that Rita has used. These allow for the addition of decorative buttons that help to make the project pop. Art quilts really allow you to express your creativity.

Rita has also made some other art quilts that are obviously for special people in her life and I think they are just lovely. Thank you so much for sharing your Art Quilt story and photos with us Rita.

Rita Says:
I LOVED this project! I have been wanting to try an art quilt but had no idea where to start. This project gave me a good taste for what it entails. It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than my previous attempts (see the other two photos).

I used metallic thread across one of the strips, but it broke while stitching, so I gave up that idea. I attempted decorative stitching around the appliques because that’s what I want to be doing. I hit the mark sometimes but missed too, so I need more practice.

You can also see that my fabric is not quite flat (in spite of trying to square it), so I need to work on that too. Alana–your videos are very clear….both the instruction, and the camera work, which gets in real close so that we can SEE what you’re doing. Thank you so much! I have a new Brother sewing machine, just in time for this unfortunate quarantine situation….so I have plenty to keep me busy and challenged.

Where can you get the pattern?

The pattern for the Gecko Art Quilt can be found at Alanda Online here.

Art Quilt for Lucy

I think Rita’s art quilt is such a lovely way to showcase Lucy’s love of volleyball.

Art Quilt for Molly

It looks like Molly is a horse lover. I do like the way Rita has put this one together. It’s another example of how you can beautifully showcase a subject.
