Readers Project: Maria’s Patchwork Tote Bag With Couching

Note from Alanda: Oh wow, I just love this charm bag that Maria had made from fabric she got from the Op shop. The colours are just gorgeous., your husband has great taste. We think you have done an amazing job Maria, and even more so seeing you haven’t done any sewing for so many years.

Maria Says:
The Pomona Boomerang bangs team inspired us to dust a Singer sewing machine from the the 1950’s (only does straight stitch) which we inherited, to make this bag for shopping (instead of using plastic bags).

My husband was attracted to the colours of a bundle of material at an Op shop (thinking it was one piece). It turned out to be sample pieces of a strong fabric! Hence the decision to make it a patchwork. The lining was from a sheet also from the Op shop.

I followed Alanda’s tutorial – Patchwork Tote Bag with Couching.

I haven’t used a machine or done any sewing for nearly 40 years! This project wasn’t very accurate but I am happy with the outcome. Thanks to Alanda’s clear instructions, I was able to achieve this! My husband is happy too, seeing the transformation of remnant material turned into a useful bag!
