There are many myths surrounding the origin of Valentines’ Day. The true origins of this day are obscure but it may be from the time in ancient Rome when they celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia which was celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15. This was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and also to commemorate Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.

  • An order of Roman priests, members of the Luperci, would start the festival by gathering at the sacred cave where Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or Lupa.
  • These priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.
  • These strips would be dipped into the sacrificial blood and the priests would take to the streets, slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide.
  • Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year.
  • Also, according to legend,  the young women in the city would place their names in a large urn and the cities’ bachelors would select a name.  The couple would pair off for a year and often these matches would lead to the couple being married.

This celebration was eventually deemed un-Christian by the Catholic church and  Pop Gelasius declared February 14th as St Valentine’s day.
