Method:
Put aside the 5½” pieces, these are our corner blocks and we will use them later.
- Take the 6″ squares and make 2 Half Square Triangles.
- If you are unsure of how to make a Half Square Triangle we have a video tutorial that shows you just how to do it Here.
Basically you place one square on top of the other, right sides together.
- Draw a line diagonally from point to point
- Sew ¼” on either side of the line you have drawn
- Cut along the drawn line.
- And you have 2 Half Square Triangles.
I haven’t added step by step photos because I have covered this in many other posts, the videos and we also have the full tutorial available.
Next, we need to press the HST.
- We do this by first setting the seam – press on the wrong side with the dark side up.
- The reason why we do this because we want the seam to sit nicely facing toward the dark side.
- Open the block and press it on the right side.
- Once the block is pressed we need to trim it to size, n this case we want to trim it to 5½”.
- We have a video on how to square up a half square triangle block.
- Now its time to lay out the squares to form the Homeward Bound block.
- Sew the two top blocks together.
- Place them one on top of the other, right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam.
- Press the seam towards the solid block color.
- Sew the two bottom squares together in the same manner.
- Place one block on top of the other, right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam.
- Press the seam towards the solid block color.
The next step is to sew the top squares to the bottom squares.
So, making sure our pattern is correct, we lay one piece on top of the other, right sides together. And because of how we pressed our seams, they will nest nicely together. Sew the blocks together with a ¼” seam.
- Once we have sewn the seam we press it open.
And there you have it – one finished Homeward Bound Quilt Block.
