For my eldest great grandson’s birthday, I decided to make him a quilt featuring the Caterpillar heavy hauler truck, construction quilt.
NOTE:
The panel features a CATerpillar heavy hauler truck and measured 36″ x 44″
Putting the Quilt Together
- I got a bit carried away with the borders and ended up with a quilt measuring 70″ x 90″, quite a large quilt for a young man. I keep telling myself that it will last him for a few years.
- The first thing was to trim up the panel. I decided to keep as much as possible of the black outer edge.
- I felt that keeping the black border added depth to the next border which has the yellow construction trucks printed on it.
- This border was 3 ½” finished.
- I decided to add a 1.5″ yellow border next, just to keep the color theme going and to brighten up the next border which is a 4½” mottled grey material.
- Then I added another 2″ black border.
- Everything was coming together nicely, but now the quilt was becoming too square, so to make it more of a rectangle I added the black and yellow “construction” stripes to the top and the bottom of the quilt.
- These construction strips measured 5¾”.
- Then it was just a matter of finishing off with a 6″ border featuring heavy construction vehicles.
- The back is dark grey with spots and I added a yellow stripe for interest.
The Finishing Touch.
- Then it was time to have the quilt top quilted.
- Chris from Sew ‘n’ Sew Sisters quilted the quilt with construction vehicles and machinery. You can see the detail in the picture below.
- She used a silver thread and it really makes the quilt pop.
- I have to say that as always I just love the way she quilts my quilts.
- The next time you are looking for someone to quilt your next quilt I highly recommend Chris.
- Once it was quilted it was time to trim the quilt and bind it.
- I decided to use black binding. I looked at using the yellow or the grey but decided that the black definitely added depth to the design.

Thank you.

I bought this panel at a craft fair here in OZ, Karla. Just do a google search for cat machinery panel K2108-10100. I found it online at the Fabric Nook- http://www.thefabricnook.com/shop/cat-machinery-panel-new-k2108-10100/. They are in Australia. It’s a great panel. Good luck with your search.

Can you tell me how you made the yellow and black border , what are the measurements. Please
Alanda Craft says
Sorry Vi I don’t have much info on this one and I no longer have it. In the post it mentions that the strip measures 5 3/4″. As for how it was made, from memory we cut the pieces on the diagonal and sewed them together to make a long strip. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep a record of this quilt as it was a one off quilt for my great grandson and I only put up the photos because it turned out so well.

Hello, I love the quilt. Where did you find the black fabric with the tiny yellow equipment on it? Thank you
Alanda Craft says
Unfortunately,Jennifer, this fabric is no longer available. I bought it here in Australia from the Fabric Nook but they no longer have a website. You may be able to find some on eBay or etsy. Also if you search for Caterpillar truck fabric you may find something similar.
I had to search for the matching fabric when I finally got around to making the quilt as I had purchased the panel some time before I made it up. And I came across some at a craft fair, which was lucky.

Alanda, your quilt is beautiful. I have a friend who is making a similar quilt and was wondering what the name of the quilt pattern Chris used to quilt your quilt and if possible where she purchased it from. I would like to use it to quilt my friend’s quilt. Thank you for your help.
Alanda Craft says
Unfortunately I don’t know what the pattern is called. Chris had an Avante 18 quilting machine with the software package that she bought in Illinois, US and that software would have included this pattern. Unfortunately Chris has passed on so I am unable to ask her.
I was really happy with how the quilt turned out and the pattern she used just set it off beautifully.
