What You Need

  • 2 pcs fabric measuring 42″ x 42″ each

What type of fabric can you use?

Technically you could use any type of fabric for this but since this is a baby blanket, you do want it to be soft and cuddly.

  • We used flannel for one of the blankets (front and back) and for the other we used a combination of flannel (for the front) and Minky (for the back).

Method

  • Place your two pieces of fabric right sides together and pin together.
  • Sew around the edge with a ½” seam ensuring that you leave an opening on one side that measures around 5 or 6 inches.
  • This will allow you to turn the blanket through.
  • Backstitch at the start and the finish as this will help to secure the stitches when you are turning the blanket through.

Easy Baby Blanket Tutorial

    • Clip the corners as shown in the video in order to reduce the bulk.
    • This will help to create nice crisp corners.
TIP:
It can often be a good idea to turn the blanket through first before clipping the corners to ensure that everything has been caught up during your sewing.

  • Reach into the opening and turn the blanket through so that the right sides are now facing outward.

easy baby blanket using minky

  • Press around the edges of the blanket and around the opening.
  • Watch the video  above for more info on how to do this.

Hi Alanda; this baby blanket is adorable! I love the fabric. My first experience with sewing was in 7th grade home economics class (1970’s). Been in love with it ever since – I didn’t get to sew much during my work years; however, now that I am retired it seems like I cannot stop buying fabric. So glad I found you on YouTube!

That is so great to hear Renae. Sewing and quilting are so addictive and I can certainly understand where you are coming from when it comes to buying fabric. We have had to make a rule (that we almost stick to ) that we have to have a project in mind before we buy the fabric. Have fun with revitalized interest in quilting.

Appreciating the time and effort you put into your website and in-depth information you offer. Thank you so much for these patterns – and thank you to the OPs too. Delightful and lovely ideas, I’d never have thought of them myself! Really looking forward to digging out the sewing machine.

Hi, I just finished watching your video. It was indeed very refreshing to me. I’m not a newbie to sewing, but it has been many years. I made things for my family when I was a young wife and mother, however being in the workforce took away sewing and creating time. In addition, my sewing machine stop working. However, I’m retired now and want to get back into sewing. Since its been awhile, around 30-40 years or so I decided to begin slow and simple. Plus, the machine that I will be using is a not a heavy duty machine, but a Singer Simple, one that I purchased for my oldest granddaughter when she decided she wanted to sew. I’m sure all the techniques will come back to memory, but I didn’t want to restart with a complicated project. So, I was looking for a simple beginning, and your tutorial was right on target. I’ve ordered fabric and waiting for it to be delivered. My plans are to emerge myself with making all types of baby blankets, etc… to give to new moms or moms in need, Paying It Forward.
There are so many new gadgets, tools and equipment out there, and I hope that I can navigate through it all. Even researching sewing machines have been challenging, but hopefully I’ll find one that will work for me. But, thank you for your simplicity in your presentation. I will give you an update, soon.

Thank you for your lovely comment MaggieAnn. I am so pleased to hear that you are returning to quilting and sewing. Everything we make can be sewn on a home machine, so your Singer should be able to handle any of our projects. This beginner quilt is a nice easy one to ease back into sewing with. You might like to take a look at our latest baby quilt as well. It is also super easy to make. I love your idea of making baby blankest for new moms and moms in need. We look forward to seeing photos of the quilts you create. Here are the links to our latest baby quilt /2021/03/30/blueberry-pie-quilt-block/ and to our submit your photos page /submit-your-project/. All the very best with your future sewing endeavours, 🙂 cheers Wanda and Paula.

do you wash your flannels before you put them together? oh chrochet hooks also work well for poking out your corners. love them as they are not sharp so you can get quite agressive.

    • Alanda Craft says

Thank you for the crochet hook tip Linda 😊, I have plenty of those on hand so will definitely use one on my next project. And no, I personally don’t wash my flannel fabric before using it.
